If you were married anywhere in the World, got divorced anywhere in the World, and now live in Chile there are many good reasons to have that divorce legally recognized in Chile. For example, your former “spouse” may still need to sign for you to sell real estate in Chile, if you bought property in Chile while you were married. Another situation might be your former spouse may still have rights over an inheritance in Chile. This may even extend to family members of your former spouse under Chile's forced inheritance laws.

Chilean Attorney Zandra Valenzuela gives a brief overview of the options for having a foreign divorce recognized in Chile and the recent changes to the laws in 2009 that make it easier for the Chilean Supreme Court to accept previously rejected foreign divorces.
